Let’s start our discussion with three points About Pornography:

  • Pornography fuels trafficking for sexual exploitation; it’s about time the Department of Justice and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children recognize this and formulate holistic approach to address the crippling issue.
  • Some of the appalling effects of the use of pornography are – a negative attitude towards women, decreased empathy for victims and an increase in sexually imposing behavior.
  • Studies reveal that increased porn consumption leads to violent fantasies and even actual violent sexual assaults against women.

Talking about this, Missing conducted a Sex Watch Survey a couple of months back to introspect into how porn consumption affects social norms and alters human perception towards women. This initiative was a branch-out of a much larger investigation on the deep impact of porn on overall mental health, sexual violence and trafficking-related crimes and relationships.

The survey is completely anonymous. It hardly takes two minutes to complete.

Talking about the results, they are incredible. They not only help tap the social triggers revolving pornography but also give insights about how the young urban population consumes porn.

A few snippets from the survey:

  • Apparently, 87.6% of Indians have consumed porn at least once in their lives, out of which 40% watches it weekly.
  • 77.77% of porn consumption happens over the internet, followed by smartphones accounting for 64%.
  • Second to curiosity, which accounts for 64.7%, a relatively huge section of population watches porn out of peer pressure (24.7%).
